Excerpt from Zygors Don't:

“Like that?” Adeline pointed to a large oil painting near the corner, partially hidden by a grassy potted plant, standing on the boarded over fireplace.

At first, when Daniel looked at the painting, he saw only broad brush strokes, rough in their superficial appearance. But then, upon closer inspection, after staring at the painting for a while, patterns emerged from details that were not apparent at first look.

Images of the standing and of the collapsed World Trade Center towers were superimposed over one another, taking up the same space.

People were walking up the crumbling stairs, surrounded by fire and crushing, twisted steel. He could see through the flames the yellow letters F.D.N.Y. on the backs of their heavy coats. Dreamlike in the haze, each of their faces, strong, determined, outlined by smoke and by fire, walking into the inferno.

The vague outline of a burning plane was hidden in the painting. And after he had stared long enough, he could see the faceless pilot. At that depth the vision was dark, empty and pitiful. He looked away and said, “Yes, like that.”

Commentary:

The reference to the faceless pilot is a reference to those captivated by groupism. The individual can have a face but the groupist is faceless in their dedication to their group identity. They have lost their individuality and thus lost their face. All that remains is dedication to the group.
